Packing for your dog

Heading away for the weekend or planning a fun day trip with your dog this long weekend? Whether it’s an autumn roadie, a walk through the forest, or a cafe visit, packing the right things for your pup ensures a stress-free and fun adventure for you both. Just like you’d never leave without your essentials, your dog needs their own little kit too.
Food, water, and the right containers
Start with the basics: enough food for the duration of your trip, plus a little extra just in case plans change. Pack it in airtight containers or resealable bags, and bring their usual treats so you can reward good behaviour along the way. Water is just as important - especially on warm days or after exercise. A collapsible travel bowl and bottle of water will keep your pup hydrated.
ID tags and leashes
Before you head out, make sure your dog is wearing a secure collar with an up-to-date ID tag. Pack a sturdy leash, a backup one just in case, and a harness if your pup tends to pull or if you’ll be doing lots of walking. If your dog wears a seatbelt harness in the car, don’t forget to bring it too. Safety first - especially on winding roads or in the great outdoors.
Familiar comforts to help them settle
Travelling can be exciting, but also overwhelming for some dogs. Bringing something that smells like home - a blanket, bed, or favourite toy - can help them settle more quickly in unfamiliar places. A lightweight mat or dog bed gives them a clear resting spot, whether you’re at a campsite or in a dog-friendly Airbnb. If they’re crate trained, bringing their crate is also a great option for keeping them calm and contained.
Clean-up supplies and seasonal extras
No trip is complete without clean-up gear. Be sure to pack enough poop bags (compostable if you can), a towel for muddy paws, and maybe even some micellar spritz for post-adventure freshness. If you’re heading somewhere cold or wet, consider packing a dog jacket and paw balm to protect sensitive pads.
If you travel often, consider creating a dedicated “dog bag” that stays partially packed. Just top it up before each trip with food and weather-specific extras, and you’ll always be adventure-ready. With the right prep, your pup will be comfortable, safe, and stoked to explore the world by your side.
