Winter skincare for dogs

When we think of winter, we think of cosy jumpers, and hot drinks, but for our dogs it can bring a few uncomfortable side effects. Just like humans, dogs can experience dry, itchy, or sensitive skin in winter, and you’ll often spot the signs: extra scratching, licking, or flaky patches. A few small changes can keep your dog’s skin and coat healthy, soft, and comfortable.

Why winter can be tough on skin
Cold air outside and dry heat inside is a combination that can really zap moisture from your dog’s skin. Add in muddy walks that require extra cleaning, and you’ve got a recipe for irritation. Dogs with existing skin sensitivities, allergies, or short coats are particularly vulnerable during winter. You might notice more shedding than usual, dry patches, or excessive licking - these are all signals that your pup’s skin could use some TLC.

Hydration isn't just about water
Ensuring your dog drinks enough water is essential, especially in winter when they might not feel as thirsty. But hydration for skin health also comes from within. Omega-rich treats and fish oils keep the coat shiny and strong. You can also consider supplements that support healthy skin. Smart grooming = Happy skin
It might be tempting to skip baths in the colder months, but regular grooming is key to keeping skin healthy. Choose a gentle dog shampoo that won’t strip natural oils like Fur Love's shampoo. Don't forget the conditioner! Dogs are just like us and need the 2 step routine of shampoo and conditioner to cleanse and moisturise the skin. We love the Fur Love conditioning mask. After bathing, use a soft towel to dry your dog completely and consider finishing with a balm like Fur Love's moisture balm - especially on exposed areas like paws, ears, and belly. Brushing in between washes also helps distribute natural oils and remove debris.

Keep their environment skin-friendly too
Heating systems can dry out the air at home which affects your dog’s skin just like it does yours. Try running a humidifier if you notice static shocks or flakiness. Provide soft, clean bedding in warm spots around the house and limit exposure to cold, wet ground with jackets or paw protection during walks. These small tweaks can make a big difference in your dog’s comfort level through winter.

Your pup’s skin is their first defence against the elements - so give it a little extra love this season. Winter might be harsh, but with the right care, your dog can stay soft and smooth all the way through to spring.
