Best dog friendly bars in Christchurch

At Sweet As Pup we love a dog friendly pub! Christchurch is fortunate to have some super dog friendly bars that welcome our furry friends with open arms. Here are some of our favourites.

No.4 Bar, Merivale - best staff

No.4 Bar and Restaurant is a friendly neighbourhood gastropub in Merivale, and it gets our vote for the friendliest to dogs! The heated courtyard makes it perfect for winter and summer, and is dog friendly. The staff at No.4 Bar love dogs, especially if you get served by Dykie who works on Sunday afternoons! They often hand out treats and puppacinos, and we know some of the locals even order eggs or other meals for their dogs which they are happy to accommodate! Follow No.4 on Instagram or Facebook to keep up with their dog day events and dog competitions.

Sprig and Fern, Merivale - best indoor area

Sprig and Fern in Merivale is the best little local run by Craig, Wendy, and Sparge - the 7 year old retriever and your local “puplican” who you are likely to meet wandering around the bar (pictured above)! Their cosy and relaxed pub is dog friendly both outside and inside! Dogs are welcomed inside on a leash and you’ll often find yourself walking past pooch after pooch sitting next to tables - they have a lot of regulars! They also serve the Wigram Brewing dog beer so your pooch doesn’t need to miss out on a pint.

Wigram Brewing - best treats

The home of DOG BEER! Need I say more? Wigram Brewing created the infamous dog beer that we sell at Sweet As Pup. Your pup can enjoy a can of the chicken and beef bone broth here in the outdoor area and even under the new shaded area. Every Friday is Food Truck Friday where you can try a range of human noms like Tiki Taco, Liam’s Hungarian Langos, and Truck Norris BBQ. We also highly recommend humans try a pint of Captain Fantastic Hazy IPA or Nana Cathy’s favourite - a shandy (¼ Vienna lager, ¾ Sprite!).

Smash Palace, Christchurch CBD - best outdoor area

Covered or uncovered, the outdoor area at Smash Palace can’t be beat for relaxing with your pup and a pint in the city. Serving their own brews (Bodgie Beer), local wines like The Boneline, and the best smash burgers in town (literally), Smash Palace has both covered and uncovered areas for you to sit.  On Thursday nights they also run their world famous bike night which is great fun, though if your pup doesn’t like loud noises be sure to visit the other 5 days of the week that they are open.
